Grading Practices: Germany vs. India
Grades range from 1.0 (excellent) to 5.0 (fail). The modified Bavarian formula is often used for conversions. A 3.0 on the German scale equals a “B” in the US.
India: Grading is usually CGPA (10-point scale) or percentages. Strict systems require 50% to pass. A 7.0 CGPA (~70%) converts to 2.80 on the German scale, but elite German universities prefer GPAs below 2.50.
Key Tips:
– Use your native grading scale unless conversion is required.
– Highlight relative performance in SOP (e.g., top 10%).
– Ensure LORs state your class ranking.
– Provide context: maximum, minimum, and achieved grades.
– Transparent, contextualized applications improve acceptance chances.
